West London is home to Portobello Road, of markets and Bedknobs and Broomsticks fame. A number of pubs, bars and cafés line the street, with The Duke of Wellington being one of the more traditional offerings, from name to design.

Invoking the name of the creator of the traditional English winter boots, the interior of the pub follows this regal theme.  Think plush drapes surrounding the private area to which we were shown, high-backed chairs and a lot of red.

The pub offers a wide variety of beers, including offerings from the Meantime brewery from Greenwich – it’s nice to see London pubs supporting London breweries.

The Duke is managed by the affable and accommodating Tony, who was all too happy to make sure our every whim was catered for.

West London prices

The customers reflect the prices – at weekends you can expect a mixture of tourists and families visiting, during the week it is largely businessmen sneaking in a few drinks while their wives think they’re still at work.

Another word on those prices – they’re steep on a budget. Meantime was £4.95 a pint, and you’re going to be hard pushed to spend less than £4 on anything (unless you’re that cola drinker).

Food is similarly expensive, but go on Burger Tuesdays and you can get two homemade hamburgers for just £14. There’s a GBK immediately opposite the pub, but the Duke’s burgers are cheaper and offer a viable alternative, especially in Notting Hill where inexpensive meals are hard to come by.

Staff reflect their multi-cultural guests, and are all friendly and talkative. Upon learning that it was one of the Also in London team’s first ever visits to a pub, we were offered samples of different types of beer and even a free portion of onion rings.

I'm not saying you’re going to get free stuff every time you come here, but the staff’s willingness to help bodes well for the service offered here.

The Duke of Wellington is a warm, welcoming pub with a good selection of drinks. If you find yourself down at Portobello Road market, particularly on a cold day, then this is the perfect venue to rest your feet and sample a slice of London.
